I have been a regular visitor to the Gozo since 2007 when I first fell in love with the place. Being a keen jogger back home in England I decided to enter the Gozo Half Marathon in 2010 and just found the whole experience absolutely uplifting. The spectacular setting, the challenging route and the friendly atmosphere left me completely overwhelmed at the end. Sipping ice cold beer in Xaghra Square during the awards ceremony and joining in the standing ovation as a 78 year old `veteran athlete` came in last, by a distance, and duly did 3 press ups on the stage - are some of my happiest ever memories!
On the 6th February 1977, the first edition of the Gozo Half Marathon was organised for the first time, this makes it the first ever marathon to be held on the Maltese islands. Fr. Anthony Refalo established the event, he derived such an idea from similar activities during his stay in Rome. Today, the Gozo Half Marathon is successfully coordinated by a group of young youths emanating from the Xaghra Youth Centre.
During the first edition in 1977, the Marathon was organised for only 35 participants, this number has been increasing over the years. In fact from what was perceived to be as a local initiative, today this event caters for athletes coming from every corner of the Maltese islands and even from overseas.
The marathon is set amongst the rural and scenic natural countryside that Gozo is renowned for. Passing through seven localities, athletes can enjoy the unique landmarks the sister-island has to offer. Beginning from the village of Xaghra, home to the historic Ggantija temples and marvelous Ramla bay the trek makes it way through Victoria, Sannat, Xewkija, Ghajsielem, Qala, Nadur and ends up again in the Xaghra Square.
